FinOps guide · Microsoft Copilot

Budget Microsoft Copilot Cowork with confidence.

Cowork is billed by usage in Copilot Credits — not per seat. This guide and calculator help IT & FinOps teams understand the model, forecast monthly spend, and build a credible business case.

The model, explained simply

How Copilot Cowork is priced

Cowork is an agentic system: you describe an outcome, it plans and executes multi-step work. You pay for the work performed, measured in Copilot Credits — Microsoft's universal usage currency, pooled across your tenant.

$0.01 per credit

One Copilot Credit costs one cent (list price). 100 credits = $1. Simple, linear, pay-as-you-go.

Pooled per tenant

Credits are shared across Cowork, Copilot Studio, Dynamics 365 and Power Platform — one balance, governed centrally.

Scales with complexity

A quick draft costs little; a deep multi-step analysis costs more. Consumption tracks the work actually done.

See what you actually pay for

A single Cowork request consumes credits across four cost drivers. Watch them engage, one by one, on a real example — that is how Copilot Credits are actually spent.

An example Cowork request

For my upcoming customer meeting with Adatum, analyse my recent emails, meeting notes, CRM updates and support incidents to identify deal status, risks and competitive threats. Then create a briefing doc and a client-ready presentation, and email Moana and Tim a concise summary with recommended actions.

Models
The AI model chosen for each step — balancing quality, speed and cost.
Context
Reading the people, files, meetings and history behind the request.
Tools
Actions taken: drafting the doc, building the deck, sending the email.
Runtime
Managed orchestration that keeps the multi-step work running to the end.
Copilot Credits consumed More drivers engaged → more credits

More context, more tools, a heavier model — more credits. That is why the very same request can be a “light” or a “heavy” one, and why your bill tracks the real work done, not a flat per-seat fee.

Light, Medium & Heavy tasks

Microsoft's illustrative per-task ranges. The calculator below lets you set your own credit assumptions per task type.

Light

A weekly status update drafted from your calendar and top priorities, saved for review.

70–200 credits
  • Draft a reply to an email thread in your own tone
  • Summarize a Teams meeting transcript into key points
  • Turn rough notes into a clean, ordered to-do list
  • Rewrite a paragraph to be shorter and clearer
Medium

A customer-meeting briefing assembled from emails, calendar, CRM and recent files.

400–600 credits
  • Build a customer-meeting brief from emails, calendar and CRM
  • Draft a project status report from several documents
  • Create a slide outline from a long document
  • Summarize a competitor’s recent moves from a few sources
Heavy

Analyse 6 months of usage data, classify patterns and produce a leadership-ready analysis.

1,500+ credits
  • Analyse 6 months of usage data into a leadership-ready analysis
  • Draft a full RFP response from multiple reference documents
  • Assemble a quarterly business review deck from many sources
  • Synthesize a large document set into a recommendation report
⚠️

Cowork requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license

Cowork has no included credit entitlement — it is 100% usage-billed on top of the M365 Copilot seat. Budget the seat cost separately from the credit spend the calculator estimates below.

Witivio advice Because credits pool at tenant level, set spend policies and usage thresholds in the Microsoft 365 admin center from day one. Treat credits as a managed budget line, not an open tap — that is the heart of Copilot FinOps.

Witivio advice Notice how prompt-heavy personas such as Technical Workers can cost far more per user than Managers. Size your heavy users carefully — they drive most of the spend. Model a conservative and an ambitious adoption scenario before you commit.

Cost is only half the story. Here we weigh the credit spend against the time Cowork gives back — using ranges anchored to Microsoft's example tasks, with a realization factor so the numbers stay honest.
